The pharyngeal orifice is a funnel shaped opening in the dorsolateral aspect of the pharynx that forms an oblique slit rostral and ventral to the dorsal pharyngeal recess. On the walls of the guttural pouch look for internal and external carotid arteries and cranial nerves 9 and 12. Diagnosis is made through an endoscopic examination of the stylohyoid bone and its articulation temporohyoid joint within the guttural pouch.
